You’ve probably seen some of the many blogposts we’ve written on how to give a good wedding toast. We found the video above on YouTube as an example of a bad wedding toast.
Here’s what’s wrong with it:
- Awkward intro. “We’re loud people, but don’t worry about that.” Huh? Your first line should be an attention getter, sharp and focused. The audience didn’t know how to react to this guy’s first line.
- He starts to tell a story, and catches himself in the middle of it with the realization that it’s a ‘bad story.’ Then he awkwardly sits down. What?!
- He starts a new story about meeting the bride. Along the way he slips in that he never liked his two sisters, a stab that makes the guests even more uncomfortable.
- He blows his opportunity to say something nice about the bride by complaining that she goes to bed too early. Somehow, that “ruined that relationship, too.”
- Next, floundering on what to say next, all he come up with is, “Anyways …” Everyone in the place is uncomfortable at this point.
- His next line is a zinger: “My brother is a douche.” Every guest is now thinking to themselves, “no you are. Why on earth did they give this guy a microphone?!”
- Next, he admits he’s “wingin’ it!” Duh. We hope and pray that’s his excuse, but if someone actually planned on giving a toast this bad, it would be very, very sad.
- Finally, he tries to get serious and say something nice about his brother, the groom, but all he can come up with is, “we’ve never been the best of friends, but he’s always been there for me. You’re the man brother.” No one is sure if the toast is over until he hands the mic away. Not to be unkind to this guy, but that was one bad wedding toast!
A single bad wedding toast like this one can make an entire wedding celebration crash and burn. Whoever DJed this event had their work cut out for them to salvage the rest of the evening.
Here’s our recommendation: if you’re concerned your best man isn’t up to giving a good wedding toast, get another best man. If you’re concerned that’ll ruffle too many feathers, then ask the best man to write out his toast and let you review it in advance. Insist that he read one of our blogposts on how to give a wedding toast, like this one.
The toaster in the video above did zero planning. He broke every toasting rule in the book but one: it was brief, but to the wedding guests, it still seemed like an eternity.
So what was wrong with this wedding toast? Everything?
